Importation trends in antibiotics for veterinary use in Rwanda: A retrospective study between 2019 and 2021

  10 March 2024

This study analyzed the importation trends of antibiotics for veterinary use in Rwanda between 2019 and 2021. The data was collected from the Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority’s database, and the results showed that 35,291.4 kg of antibiotics were imported into Rwanda between 2019 and 2021. The majority of these antibiotics were used in food-producing animals, with 78.9% being highly important antimicrobials for human medicine. The findings can help control antibiotic misuse and establish a correlation between antibiotic importation, consumption, and antibiotic resistance in Rwanda.
